Burning meat

So..Tesco are burning 5,000 tons of meat every year to stop it going into landfill to create energy..

Hmm, surely tackling the root cause of having too much excess waste food would be better, or re-distribute to charities?

Feels very back to front to me....

There was a great article about food waste in the FT here

I used to work in a supermarket and the amount of food that we threw away because it was out of date was disgraceful! Lots of the tinned goods or packaged goods never go off anyway, yet we had to throw them out because it was no longer legal to sell. We did manage to save some bread and other goods where the date had not been printed on though, but only by selling them to staff at discounted prices - we still couldn't sell perfectly good food to the customers. Crazy!

You can try doing dumster diving.

It does seem totally immoral to be throwing away edible food when lots of people are struggling and in some parts of the world........starving to death!

There is an interesting statistic from WRAP, the government-backed organisation running the 'Love Food Hate Waste' campaign. Apparently if we didn’t dispose of food which could have been eaten, we would save at least 15 million tonnes in greenhouse gas emissions each year; this is the equivalent of taking one in five cars off the UK's roads.  You can read more about this subject on the SolarUK (designers and manufacturers of solar water heating systems) blog:
