Ethical home cleaning

I’m on a new journey here looking at ethical cleaning. Being very short of cash I have to be careful with the budget. There are a lot of cheap cleaning products but shampoo seems to be the one that looks as if it is going to cost me a fortune.

  • Faith in Nature’s shampoos and conditioners are good and not too pricey. Not sure how much, maybe about £2.50 a bottle. If you live in London, Unpackaged on Amwell Street (near Angel) will refill your empties too.

  • Yes I have seen the Faith in Nature shampoos and with a bit of maths not much more than I have been paying.

I’m waiting for the next meeting of the daughter’s health food co-op before I jump in with shampoos as she says she has a brand that is not too expensive but is ethical, etc. I have enough to see me through for some time so will clear the back log. Having got to the back of the cupboard, I am using up stockpiled items and replacing all cleaning items with ethical ones as replacements are needed.

Unfortunately I’m in distant rural Northumberland but have heard of Unpackaged. It sounds such a good idea too. Thing is – we don’t have the population here so don’t get many of the really good ideas.

  • The cheapest way is to buy in bulk, if you can afford it. Suma Co-operative for instance is probably 15 to 25% cheaper if you can order enough to avoid the transport charge. Our house ordered £300 worth of stuff. That reminds me, you also need somewhere to store the large volume of stuff!

  • Good points – maybe I would do best looking at joining a group that has enough members to avoid the transport charge. But it is certainly an interesting way to go.
