The Flying Nag

Hello.

I’m putting together the flying nag and I’d like to run some ideas by you – it would be great to know what you think.

Firstly, I’ve found out that in the UK and Europe, the air industry gets the most subsidies, roads the middle, and trains the least. This seems a bit weird to me. The wrong way around.

So I’m thinking of asking everybody to Nag ‘them’ – (specific powerholders) to address the balance and make it easier – and cheaper! – for us to take the train instead of the plane in the UK and Europe. Do you think that’s a good idea? If I made it easy, would you do it? Would you pass it on to your friends?

Secondly, some people seem to have interesting holidays that don’t involve airports. Other people seem to always have holidays that involve airports. We were thinking about having a way for people to write up airport-free holidays they’ve really enjoyed, even put up pictures, if they’d like to recommend them to others.

Would you like to see the airport-free holidays that other people have had? Would you like to write a bit about any of your own that were really good?

Finally, we also thought, we could categorise it into:

outdoor / adventure
spa / pampering
beech and bars
culture
short breaks
courses and weird stuff

do you think those categories would work for you or is there something missing?

It would be great to know what you think. In the end, it’s all about you, and people you know, and people they know, getting involved and loving it, so I want to make sure we make something you want.

Yours,

The Nag

  • Hi!

I think this is a massively important subject for a nag, given how much air travel contributes to climate change. I’d definitely be interested in taking part in a nag on it. Perhaps you could add a link to seat61.com? I travelled to Greece by train and boat last year using a timetable drawn up on seat61 and had an amazing time – no airport involved…

There could also be an interactive table of some sort to work out how much carbon it would cost you travel to a certain place by different methods of transport? (like a travel carbon footprint). This might help put flying into perspective because I think a lot of people don’t realise quite how damaging it is.

    Cheers,

    Eluned
