Grace

Hi,
I am interested in the food side of what NAG has done with the clothing industry (and thanks for all the tips and helps to send a letter, excellent!) I have been looking at eg Tate and Lyle and their record is shocking but it’s using the right lingo to ask appropriate questions.
I’m running a few slavery awareness sessions in Aberdeen shortly, with a focus on chocolate. Any advice welcome!

  • HI Grace

    Do you mean you want to Nag international food companies to improve their sustainability standards along their supply chains?

    Can you tell me a bit more about Tate and Lyle?

    After looking into the flower industry, it seems like we can categorise the issues into

    Environmental issues – local ecological impact, – pesticides – CO2 emissions;

    Social issues – workers rights – working conditions – pay – community cost or benefit

    Economic issues – Who works and who profits

    I find it quite useful to group the issues under there

    Who are you running the sessions with and what are you trying to achieve?

    All the best,

    The Nag

  • Hi Grace,
    I’m not sure what your audience is, but Oxfam have a board game for children about Chocolate trading.

    PS one recent snippet of info regarding Tate & Lyle – they have just pledged to go 100% fairtrade on their (retail) sugar. A positive step in the right direction.

  • Thanks Saski and The Nag, sorry for not being back about this, the slavery awareness days went well. it was an opportunity to allow folk to see a little of the depth and breadth of where slavery is happening in our world’s community and how the more well off have been unwittingly benefitting from those who are suffering… little steps. helpful book Ending Slavery by Kevin Bales. Thanks for tips regarding questions for tate and lyle, good to hear they are picking up on fairtrade. yes i do want to Nag international food companies to improve their standards, it’s finding the time to carry on investigating these companies, isn’t it?
