Nag question #1
Can you have a compost loo in the city?
I have a garden. My housemates are worried about it a) smelling and b) attracting rats.
Does anyone in a city have a compost loo in their garden? How did you do it, and do you have problems with smells or rats?
I've been getting really interested in compost loos. I'm struck by two things: a) that it takes my compost bin about 1.5 years to turn veggie scraps into beautiful compost, but it takes my body about 8 hours to turn waste food into something like a compact lump of something quite similar to earth. and - b) In nature, animal waste helps to enrich the soil; in our system, we flush that neat little chunk into an energy-intensive system where it's flushed with thousands of litres of clean water and dumped in little pieces in the sea. How gross is that?
