Nag question #2

How to save using plastic water bottles

One of the reasons I use water bottles is when I travel, my job involves me traveling to Africa several times a year, I do worry about the flying but that is another story...., I can't take my own water bottle on a plane as they won't let me through security with it, which means every time I travel I have to buy a bottle of water once airside and then while I am in whichever African country I am visiting, which they also take off me when I leave. I know the reason for this is because of the fear of terrorism but why can't airport authorities just ask you to take a mouthful of the water in front of them to prove the water is not some kind of liquid explosive or whatever it is they think, this would mean despite having to buy water in places where it not always safe to drink at least you can take the same bottle with you and when you get home it can be used again from my own tap?
Thanks Stewart

  • It would be possible to take a swig of meths and then take a bottle on a plane...hmmm ..although it's annnoying I think I prefer the airports current approach - however why can't they provide a water fountain in the terminal to use once through security?

  • Water purification tablets? There's some wonderful stuff called Chlor-floc (water purification powder) that I've used before on river trips and overland trips in Southern Africa. Not too sure if you get it outside of South Africa, but I'm pretty sure you get similar things around the world.

  • I've taken an empty water bottle through airport security w/me--the reusable kind, I mean... mine was one of the stainless steel ones. They have just asked me to open it & they peer inside to make sure it's empty.
