Have you ever wondered why horizontal travel (boats and trains, etc) tends to be more expensive than vertical travel (aeroplanes, helicopters, private jets etc)?
Horizontal can be more pleasurable - the long sunset boat ride, a good book on a nice train... But, sometimes the call of the budget airline is strong.
