Horizontal Holiday #2 Low Carbon Travel - Around the world without flying!
created by slowtravel 6 months ago
The Summary
What do you think? Ok, so it's the extreme version of slow, horizontal travel but 381 days and 45,000 miles later (and a measly 1.8 tonnes of carbon) and I can honestly say it's one of the best trips I ever did...
The Journey
Well, we went east...all the way round. Europe, Trans-Mongolian express, China, Japan, South East Asia, Australasia, mexico and Central America by train, bus, cargo ships across the big blue wobbly bits and the odd beliigerent camel.
The Benefits
The wonderful transition of landscape, culture, people, language and cuisine, the fact that the world feels huge when you actually travel all the way through it rather than just over it - resize your planet - drop the superficial perspective of a 'small world' that flying creates and get out there and get in it.
The Cost
£10,000 all-in for 13 months on the road (approx £28/day)
