The Nag

Being lucky enough to have a friend from Redruth, I was also able to get free accommodation in his nan's cottage in Newlyn, Penzance. I took the train to Penzance from London - actually buying a return to Plymouth and then another ticket from Plymouth to Penzance worked out cheaper even after having to get a first-class ticket for the latter part!! We were very lucky with the weather having a week of almost non-stop sunshine and blue skies. There are plenty of beaches and typical picture-postcard Cornish villages around to see and spend sunny days. We made the journey to St Austell to visit the Eden Project which was a good day out and also took the trip over to St Michael's Mount (the lesser-known cousin of Mont St-Michel in France). St Ives has good places to shop and the Tate Gallery while there are good facilities for surfers all round the coast. And then in the evenings, there are plenty of restaurants serving good food including freshly caught fish and with outside terraces to finish off the evening watching the sunset. It was a fantastic holiday and thoroughly recommended but I guess, the weather is a factor!

I am planning to go on this holiday next month. But my boyfriend and I are both on benefits so have little money, and apart from the train there are going to be walking and camping mostly. Have you any ideas how I can find little campsites, as on the internet they are all horrid big caravan park ones? Any cheap B&B or hostels would be helpful too. And which are the beaches for swimming? I think that unless one is camping it still ends up being more expensive than a holiday in Greece or Turkey!

I went on a spur of the moment camping trip to Cornwall (Looe, in fact!) a few years ago and I found that the most useful way of finding campsites was the local tourist information centres. They are surprisingly honest when it comes to which campsites are nice and which aren't. They also seemed to be quite sensitive to how much money you have. The place we found off the internet turned out to be, like you said, a massive caravan park with a factory at one end! But the campsite we found through the tourist information was really beautiful on a cliff top with great walks all around. And because there are so many beautiful places, if you don't like the place you're in its very easy to move and find somewhere else. It ended up being a great holiday on a very low budget.

I went to Devon instead - near Exeter and stayed for free with relatives. Absolutely beautiful week... especially the fossil hunting in Lyme Regis.

I can not afford to holiday in cornwall as it cost to much. It is cheaper to go to Spain if you fly.
