I hate cold callers

I hate it when people from random companies call my house and waste my time

They really get on my nerves

I hate being rude on the phone, but sometimes the only way to get rid of them is to hang up.

Is there something out there i can register with to stop this happening?

    Ask 'em?

You can ask to be taken off their records. I tend to just hang up when I hear the words 'can I interest you-?', rather than do this, but it seems to work for my mum.

    Get rid of them!

Register with the Telephone Preference Service - it's easy!

    Go to http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/.

The ones who don't even leave a number (on 1471)...

    ...should be shot.

    Be polite

As soon as they tell me who they are I just politely say Im sorry Im really busy, or Im not interested-thankyou.  they are just earning a living, alot of those sort of jobs have to make a minimum of calls to get paid dont they I think?  So I dont mind them phoning, I just politley say goodbye before they get into the speil of what they are selling.

    Empathy

I agree with 'mouse' esp in these hard days of growing unemployment, this is one way some folk can earn a living - at least they are working. I listen (not always patiently, must admit) and then ask for website details where I can read all about it in my own time, as I can't make a snap decision over the phone without checking my budget, etc.

I also agree that its best to be polite to these people. My boyfriend is currently unemployed and managed to work in a call centre place for about two months before I begged him to stop because he was coming home so depressed every night. But I have found some niffty solutions to being polite and getting the people off the phone quickly (well at least the work for me):
    1) Sorry I'm house-sitting and the home-owner is not here.
    2) I rent my property and therefore you would need to contact the landlord.
    3) Sorry I'm the maid.
    and finally...
if you do speak another langauge just start speaking in a very distressed voice. This usually throws them and they hang-up of their own account.
    Hope this helps!

    • Number four on this list is classic!

The house sitting one is excellent though - totally diffuses it, and removes any reason for them to talk to you any more.

      Nice!

    cold callers

It is when they ring at the most inconvenient time that I am hard pressed to be polite. One answer to time share and similar offers is to tell them you are 85 years old - they soon go. I suppose the quicker you get rid of them the more calls they can make, if you are thinking of their job and their bonuses, which I have to say I don't.

Babybiohazard has a good point on speaking a different language. How about Alien? I just give them a chance to have a bit of fun at work. You could take on the Grandpa Simpson role and just start ranting a random tale. If you have time but your not interested in the sale, try taking lead of the conversation yourself, and give them a giggle in their crappy job role. I'm from Brighton where i think the whole population of youngsters who don't come here for Uni end up starting out in telesales. Listen to Martha Tilstone and the Woods's Artificial for more empathy:

So no what you mean and...

...as much as I want to be polite, you cant always do that.  Once upon a time a long, long time ago I used to do this and these people are trained to keep going till you hang up.  The only effective (but unpleasant) way to deal with them is to either register yourself on the telephone preference scheme or say straightaway that you are not interested and hang up!
