I wish life was like the country

I've just come from a weekend in the country where I:

Drank wine and bought a case straight from the vineyard
Drank beer, produced less than a mile away
Picked my own fruit and veg straight from the farm
Supported local farmers by buying meat and produce locally

It's exactly the lifestyle I wish to live, but so difficult to keep up with when living in the middle of London.

    Small steps first

Why not try small steps first?

Get your veg delivered from a local organic producer, support farmers markets where possible and look to buy local whenever you can

Or better still move to the country!

It's nice, green, quiet and not far from London!

Don't have to live in the countryside

In a small city or town you may get this.  Where I live there is a large brewery but I don't like the beer; best brew your own.  There's also a pick your own fruit farm two/three miles from where I live and also a weekly farmers' market.

    rab

Become a vegetarian and grow the veg. that you are able to accomodate, in containers.

    allotments

I know that the waiting list for an allotment can be years, however you can buy from the people growing fruit and veges there.

    yes but...

...don't you have to drive everywhere in the countryside? Or do you risk life-and-limb and go by bike?

    a happy medium?

i live in zone three (london) and within a mile of my flat there are two microbreweries producing fine beer.  my local transition initiative has just set up a garden share scheme, so even though there's no allotments free for many years i can grow my own fruit and veg.  they're also setting up a community food-growing garden, so we can produce more locally.  we have parks and heathland, so if you pretend you can't hear the continual din of traffic and aircraft, you can pretend you're not in the city.

suggestions: find out what your local community groups and organisations, especially transition initiatives are up to, and try and make things happen if they aren't already!

    Thoughts of local produce

I live 40 minutes from London by train. We can do all the things you love to do easily, mostly without getting in a car. You need to move! Other than that go to Farmers markets in London. There are loads

    Grow your own?

Do you have the time to have an allotment?   I got one and I totally love it - try freecycle.org for the equipment and contact your local council for details of allotment schemes - you can eat veg you grew yourself, enjoy the outdoors and meet other country hopers in the meantime.  If it really isnt possible get yourself a window box - at least then you can look at the concrete jungle through a frame of prettiness!
